arkana: rebirth of a landmark

This well-known timber and hardware store will be resurrected into a cutting edge, residential, retail and commercial nucleus. ARKANA fronts three vantage points and symbolises both Dandenong's history and its revitalisation as a vibrant, interactive urban hub.

Designed by Hayball Architects, Melbourne, in close consultation with the government's planning body, VicUrban, ARKANA will be an ensemble of office, apartments, retail, conference facilities and cafe dining. Prominently located at the gateway to Dandenong, and a bookend to the new boulevard, ARKANA will be an iconic landmark and meeting place of social diversity.

The bold sculptural forms of natural honest concrete, timber and levels of colour are inspired by the stacked stamped timber of ARKANA'S former life. The edges project forward to a sharp chamfer, like the teeth of a timber saw blade, literally making ARKANA a "cutting edge" corner on Lonsdale Street.

The outside story continues inside, where polished concrete floors, finished timbers and unadorned glass follow the principles of sustainability, natural lighting and expansive views of Dandenong Park and the boulevard.

In short, ARKANA will be a Melbourne building in Dandenong.
